Diabetes is classified in ancient Ayurveda texts dating back to pre 2nd century BCE. It can be successfully managed by following Ayurveda principles.    

What is Diabetes?

Glucose is the main source of energy for our brain and cells. Our cells cannot absorb sugar directly, it has to be converted into glucose. In a healthy individual, blood sugar is regulated through insulin – a hormone secreted by pancreas. When we eat food, our blood sugar level rises, and Insulin converts sugar into glucose and allows our body to use energy (glucose) when needed or store it. It is an essential hormone that keeps blood sugar level from getting too high or too low. When our body is either unable to produce enough insulin or unable to use it efficiently, in medical terms such condition is referred to as Diabetes.      

 

What are common symptoms of Diabetes:

  • Excess urination with sweet smell

  • Increased appetite

  • Excessive thirst

  • Fatigue

  • Weight loss or gain

  • Non-healing ulcer

  • Blurred Vision

 

Classification of diabetes according to modern science:

  • Type 1: When body does not produce enough Insulin

  • Type 2: When body produces insulin but either the amount is not sufficient for body’s needs or body’s cells are resistant to it.

Classification of diabetes according to ancient medical science of Ayurveda:

According to ancient Ayurveda texts dating back to thousands of years such as Charak Samhita, Sushruta Samhita, Ashtanga Sangraha etc., diabetes is referred to as Madhumeha – one of 20 types of Prameha (urological disorders). Madhumeha is also classified as Maha Rog (major disease) because ineffective management of Diabetes can lead to damage or dysfunction of organs such as kidney, heart, retina, and nerves and blood vessels.  

Ayurveda treatment for Diabetes

According to Ayurveda, root cause of Diabetes is attributed to imbalance of Kapha Energy (earth and water elements) which results in decrease in digestive fire thereby reducing body’s ability to metabolize energy and eliminate toxins. Hence, according to holistic approach of Ayurveda, taking insulin to manage blood sugar levels isn’t sufficient and is best managed by a combination of following.

 

  1. Herbal medication: There is a variety of medicinal plants and formulations that assist in rebalancing Kapha energy in the body.

  2. Personalized diabetic diet plan: There is a wide array of foods that have proven to be beneficial in successfully managing Diabetes. A personalized diet plan is key to controlling blood sugar levels. 

  3. Physical and mental wellbeing: Yoga aasanas such as Katiichakrasana, Tdasana, Pavanamuktasana, Gomukhasana, Shalabhasana, Vakrasana, Dhanurasana, Mayurasana, Pashchimottanasana, ushtrasana etc. are proven to aid energy rebalance. In addition, daily meditation for a balance mind is highly recommended. Daily physical activity such as brisk walk, swimming, biking, dancing, aerobics etc. for 30-60 minutes is also recommended.

  4. Dincharya (daily regimen): Dincharya refers to daily routine. It helps establish balance in one’s constitution. apart from regularizing a person’s biological clock, it helps generate self-esteem, discipline, peace, happiness and longevity.    

  5. Ayurveda therapies: Depending upon individual needs, ayurveda therapies such as Vamana, Virechana, and Vasti are used to successfully correct relevant dosha imbalance.
